Best of 2006: singles

Here are my favorite singles* released in 2006. They are unranked, except for the first one, which easily gets the top spot.

Christina Aguilera - "Ain't No Other Man" Still drrrty, but at least she looks a bit cleaner. The excellent production makes me forget about her oversinging.

The Raconteurs - "Steady As She Goes" Sure, they should kick some cash Joe Jackson's way, but this is the best rock track of the year, hands down.

Regina Spektor - "Fidelity" Move over, Tori. There's a new quirky piano girl in town.

Katie Melua - "Nine Million Bicycles" Should I get married, this song'll be played at the reception. And if I'm lucky, I'll marry Katie.

Lily Allen - "LDN" English socialite removes her blinders and takes a stroll through London.

Amy Winehouse - "Rehab" The anthem for our generation? Maybe.

Belle & Sebastian - "Funny Little Frog" "I had a conversation with you at night/it's a little one-sided, but that's alright." I love this band.

The Pipettes - "Pull Shapes" Prepare for the second coming of the wall of sound girl groups.

Art Brut - "Good Weekend" "I've seen her naked TWICE!" Okay, I'm not sure if this was officially released as a single in the US (it was put out in the UK in '05), but it's a damn fun song.

My Chemical Romance - "Welcome to the Black Parade" Ever wonder what it would sound like if you put emo, Queen, U2, and Pink Floyd in a blender?

Tilly and the Wall - "Rainbows in the Dark" All bands should use a tap dancer as percussion. Okay, maybe not, but it works for them.

Mates of State - "Fraud in the 80's" They say husbands and wives shouldn't work together. Introducing the exception to the rule. Definitely one of the best videos of the year.

And "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley wasn't bad, either (by law, that song must be included on all Best of 2006 lists).

*Officially released, not just random favorite songs.

I've only checked out about half of these.

Raconteurs - tight.
Art Brut - shite.
My Chemical Romance - white (seriously, is Gerard half poltergeist?)
Tilly & The Wall - aight.
Mates of State - nice.

I'll listen and weigh in on the others later.

now you're definitely making me feel lazy.

Christina has some pipes, that's why I like her...

Racconteurs - very good. I wanted to go see them when I was in London (they were on tour there) - hey two dudes from Cincy are in the band!

Katie Melua - Love that song from the disc you sent me.

Amy Winehouse was the best of your collection here. I've never heard her before. I am obsessed with the Motown sound and she's got it. By her looks, I would have never expected her to sound like that.

The Pipettes - Um, I'll have to pass on that.

My Chemical Romance - Love love love that song. It made me cry once, but then, I'll cry at anything.

And the last two had no sound...

Oh well. They can't be as good as Winehouse.

Regina Spektor: Meh.
Katie Melua: Meh.
Lily Allen: Meh+.
Amy Winehouse: Meh+.
Belle & Sebastian: Meh.
The Pipettes: Meh+.

Micah, you're slipping. With the exception of The Raconteurs, MCR, and X-Tina (kind of), this stuff is all pretty middling...lukewarm.

I gotta say that the "best of the rest" would be Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, and...The Pipettes. Thanks to one of my coworkers, I've heard a fair amount from the former two artists; Lily's alright but Amy is disappointing (KtG remarks that she's got that Motown sound...well, she's definitely got a throwback sound, but I won't mention her in the same breath as Motown until she can find a strong hook.) Lily's track was meatier and a bit more advanced, but The Pipette's hook slays them all.

Anyhow, whilst listening to all of these singles I found a perfect business opportunity for you, Micah! Compiling mixes of fresh, new music to be played in the waiting areas of OB/GYN offices!

You can thank me later.

THSE - I love the fact that you rhymed your one word reviews. Can you keep it up - using "-ite" - for the rest? CHALLENGE!

jasdye - Me or THSE?

KtG - Yeah, that Amy Winehouse disc is awesome. It's only available as an import right now (or you can go with the Micah Option: bit torrent), but it'll be released stateside in March. I may even buy it. It's just that good.

Heh heh. My hysterectomy is scheduled for next week. I'll inquire about employment opportunities. Oh, how I'd love to DJ during mammograms.

Will this make up for my choices?

I've been meaning to download the latest Mastodon (sp?) album. Once I do, that should up my testosterone level somewhat.

micah,

you expect me to remember?

i'll check out the songs now. but i hope the lilly allen song lives up to some of the lilly allen hype on All Songs Considered (the stuff i downloaded didn't).

Personally, for me it does. Every song on the album is a winner.

I think she'll be too English to catch on with the American public, though.

i thought the belle and sabastian tip was a great rock song, possibly better than the raconteurs.

and i was really digging the winehouse selection. never heard of her before, but i think she's got that early motown sound going on, before they got really tight.

jasdye - I LOVE the fact that Winehouse's sound is retro, yet still contemporary. Definitely recommended.

Dr. Zeius - I got into B&S over the summer. Their sound is much fuller now, so if you like them work your way backwards through their catalog (Dear Catastrophe Waitress is another winner; that's where they first stepped up from their twee background).
