It was in the mid-80s today. I'm declaring the Single of the Summer.

"Grace Kelly" by Mika (love his little dig at the Freddie Mercury comparisons)

I've listened to the album via the clips on iTunes and I dig it greatly. In fact, I just picked it up from Target tonight ($8!). Tomorrow morning's commute is going to be really jubilant.

Wait...that wasn't Freddie Mercury?

Slow your roll there, Micah. this won't be single of the summer - if only for the fact that most humans can't sing along when you get the the high pitched screechy bits of the chorus. seriously, is dude channeling a spider monkey? Flipper, maybe?

besides, we don't need another Freddie Mercury. [cue Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead."]

yeah, sounds like a fun Queen tribute band came out with their own songs.

i'm thinking lily allen's got the singles of the summer.

Is Lily working on new material already? Her debut album's been out for awhile now. She'd be a good candidate, only I think she's shot her load for 2007. Single of the Summer will likely come from elsewhere...leftfield.

(no, not the electronica outfit, Leftfield.)

I was recently gifted this song, and I have to agree with you 100%. LOVE IT!

i don't know if it's been playing on the radio yet (or if anything, for that matter, is playing on the radio anymore), so i wouldn't surmise. except for the fact that lily's only been out stateside for a couple months and it may take a few more months to catch up with these sleeper hits (as it did w/ me).

You could be right, Jas. If the label's timing is right, they could release a single so that it is poised to make a killing over the summer. Still, Lily's album dropped (stateside) in winter AND she's already got plenty of press (read: she's known to more than just hipsters now.) Hell, she sold out two nights at the 930 Club here in DC last month (February) and then they announced another date in April. Guess what? That show's also sold out. Bottom line? She's going to have plenty of competition from new summer releases as well as under-the-radar sleepers.

wooly - Strangely, no.

Reg - Aw, c'mon. What boy hasn't put on his mother's bathrobe, tucked it back, and sang along to "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing"? Is it just me? Anyone? Anyone?

Every generation needs a Freddie.

jasdye - I lurve LA's album, but like Reg, I've been listening to it sind late '06. It's hardly fresh, unlike my recent discovery of Mika. But you're right - her album is Pure Summer Pop. Too bad it was released in the dead of winter.

mags - Cool beans. Great minds...
