100,000 strong (...and growing)

On the way to work yesterday morning, my not-so-trusty 2000 Volkswagen Jetta hit a milestone: 100,000 miles. It only took about 8 years and 3 months.

And to think last August when I took it in to get it serviced, the mechanic recommended that I replace the timing belt if I wanted it to last beyond 100,000 miles. My response: "I'm hoping to unload this car soon. I'll let that be someone else's problem." Yeep! It'll be tough grasping my steering wheel with all of my fingers crossed.*

*Especially in light of the fact that a broken timing belt recently did $2,000 worth of damage to my brother-in-law's 1998 Passat.

Thanks for the heads up on the timing belt. My '98 Jetta just passed 75k so I guess I now know what to look forward to.

I didn't realize that you didn't have that done...yikessssss. So glad I have a timing chain 'stead of the belt.

Congrats on this great milestone. Did you celebrate by smoking your bong? :)

Bookstore Piet - After years of frustration (bad transmission, windows falling into the doors repeatedly) I'm done with VW (unless someone gives me one for free). My next car will be one that doesn't have such astronomical repair costs.

spydrz - The last time I got the door fixed and fluids flushed is when he recommended that. I was already out $1,000 and that would've added another grand. Couldn't afford it then, can't really afford it now.

jasdye - Hopefully, I'll be rid of it in a few months. Once I get a better job, replacing it will be priority #1. Thing is, I want an SUV and I'll pretty much be trading ridiculous repair costs with ridiculous gas prices.

Mags - A little reading comprehension: I got a hash PIPE not a bong! And, no, I haven't tried it out. Probably never will. I don't want any residue - even plain old tobacco - in it.

noah - That'd probably be for the best. To my credit, I did get my serpentine belt replaced last summer, so I got that going for me...which is nice. As for my brother-in-law's timing belt, he was on 288 commuting to work when his Passat all of the sudden just stopped working. Luckily, he was able to pull over safely and get it towed.

That's too bad about all those problems with you Jetta. I haven't had nearly as many issues. Well, except for replacing the motor on all the windows at least twice (not including 5 times in 6 months on the drivers side...). Oh yeah, my speedometer stopped working last year. For $800 I'll just drive the same as everyone else and just guess at how fast it is... Oh bother, mine sucks to. But at least it's paid for.

I found this link. However, as I only have experience working on cars made in the South of Germany, I'd leave it up to the Wolfsburgers.

Bookstore Piet - Yep, mine's paid for, too. The FIRST time my window fell into the door, I was driving from Columbus, OH, to Colonial Heights over Christmas. As I paid the toll at the WV Turnpike, the window wouldn't go up. So, I had to pull over, put on my coat, hat, and gloves, and drive the rest of the 6 or so hours. Wasn't fun.

spydrz - For something of this nature, it'd probably be for the best. Ever the optimist (or fool), I'm inclined to still let it be someone else's problem.

noah - If only your car could harness 1.21 gigawatts of power.

What the h@ll is a gigawatt?

micah,

hopefully, your new job will be across the street from your home. i don't think gas is gonna drop much.

although, subsequently, the price of suv's are...
