Of werewolves and cola

Before the Commercial Showcase (and Super Bowl) tomorrow and the $2.5 million ads are aired, I'd like to give a couple of quick thoughts on some advertising that's currently in rotation.

Good spot: Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper. By it's very name, the soda sounds disgusting, but I love the commercial for it. A woman's on a date and the guy is talking about how incredible he is and then she drinks the pop and all she hears is "Ma Na Ma Na" (you know - the song by the Muppets). Any commercial that utilizes that song is A-OK in my book (er, blog).

Bad spot: Eclipse Mints. Every time I see that stupid wolfman talking about what he had for lunch ("...and a garlic pickle"), I want to shoot him with a silver bullet. There's just something about the way he talks. Ugh.

Special mention: HP. "Picture Book" by the Kinks is just so damn CATCHY!

I actually tried that beverage, as it was on sale at the Patterson minikrops. I had to drink it down quickly so as to get rid of it.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the skeeze-fest Pillsbury commercial. There's an older couple talking about how one of them prefers dinner rolls and one prefers biscuits and it's silly to make two whole bread side dishes for two people - Ah! Pillsbury to the rescue! They have resealable dough packets for biscuits and dinner rolls! Day saved!

So the couple is sitting at dinner and the woman says, "but I can only take so much experimentation" (in reference to - gasp! - two kinds of breads) and the Pillsbury doughboy lowers the lights, prompting the woman to add "... in the kitchen."

Nothing against older couples having their fun, but, just. Ew. And *how* does that help sell dinner rolls?

Kate - So are those Chinese military PSAs? As for Dr. Pepper, my grandpa once likened it to sweetened cough syrup, which I don't think is too far off. Still, loves me my Diet Dr. Pepper.

spydrz - I have no interest in trying this. I bought a bottle of Pepsi Holiday Spice and only took one drink of it before throwing it out. Not good.

Law Fariy - I haven't seen that one. And, by your description, I should thank my lucky stores. But old people gotta get theirs!

KPMD - Haven't seen that commercial. Maybe it's only run in Philly, to target those that want so desperately to leave the city.

I love "Picture Book"!! I hate to say it, but I've downloaded a bunch of songs that are used in commercials... "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake, "Days Go By" by Dirty Vegas, even a Richard Buckner song. And is that C2 Coke commercial with "I Want To Break Free" the BEST??

I don't think I'll be downloading "manamanah", though, even though it was a favorite in High School.

There's no shame in that. I've got a folder chock full of music used in VW commercials. I like the fact that VW's site tells you what songs they use.

You may dig this site: http://www.adtunes.com/

I'm glad the Kinks are at least getting some attention.

And, yes, Queen can do no wrong.

This Yankee Bitch is thrilled with the Pats win.

As for the commercials... some of them were fab. Props for the one with Carson Kressley (and Cindy Crawford), and I also really enjoyed the bizzare one with the cat. And yes, the ones with the soldiers in the airport made me tear up. I am such a sap.

panthergirl - Not a problem.

KPMD - Chimps are the funniest animal ever. I totally forgot the Monkey Movies. Yeah, my bro was a fan. Would you have any doubt?

KtG - Yeah, that "Welcome Home" commercial was great. I liked the FedEx one where it breaks down the 10 cliches of Super Bowl commercials. Overall, though, the ads this year weren't all that. Although, I would totally engage in coitus with the GoDaddy.com girl.

Kate - And then it's off to Red China!

She seems like she has a great personality. And I'd only be intimate with her after being in a long, committed and loving relationship. ;)

Micah,
I play that werewolf on that Eclipse Mints ad. What exactly is it that you don't like about the way I said those lines?
