What's a boy to do?

I'm kind of ambivalent about the upcoming movie Kicking & Screaming. On one hand, it stars Will Ferrell, whose antics I love. On the other hand, it centers around soccer - a sport I absolutely hate. The fact that it shares a title with a mediocre mid-90s Eric Stoltz flick, I don't really care about (although a little originality in Hollywood wouldn't hurt). Ah, hell. I'll go see it.

I wish I could find Chuck Klosterman's excellent essay on the evils of soccer ("George Will vs. Nick Hornby" from his book Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs). The closest that I can find are some excerpts here.

Ohhh... soccer's not that bad. I played it (albeit poorly) for seven years. Even got a prized trophy when my Bad News Bears team won the city invitational. And besides, any sport that condones drunkenness and crowd rowdiness is alright by me.

Will Ferrell? That just seals the deal that I want to see this flick. Thanks for mentioning it, I didn't even know about it.

Yes, it is that bad. :) I really wish I could find the full text of that essay, because it is quite funny, yet right on point. All I can say is consult your local library. Cincinnati does have libraries, no?

I added a link to the movie's official site in my post.

Ah, soccer. The sport that can be played for more than ninety minutes without a winner. I had to watch several games while "over there" the past two weeks...excuse me, they call them "matches."

Now Micah, why did you have to go and knock on soccer? I thought I liked you!! I played soccer for 18 years and was damn good at it (along with my two brothers) and although it's not the most exciting thing to watch, playing is actually quite fun. Didn't you know it's the sport of the future?

spydrz - Sorry you had to endure that. Must've been rough. At least the soccer hooligans are entertaining.

Yvonee - What's up, babe? I had to play it in school and was bored to death. Different strokes, I guess. And I believe that "sport of the future" malarky in regards to kickboxing (a la Say Anything) rather than soccer. :)

CB - GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLL!

What idiots. I absolutely love Spiders basketball, but I'm not going to throw a flare at the St. Joe's bench...yet.

I'm with you there. Not a Dook fan.
