The rise of sitcom actors who break lawn chairs

There's an article posted over at Slate in which the author bemoans the growing trend among sitcoms where actors such as Kevin James and Jim Belushi are paired up with much more attractive (and slimmer) TV spouses. A blow to feminism? Schlubby male fantasy? You decide.

Frankly, this is nothing new. You can trace this back to Ralph and Alice on "The Honeymooners," if not farther. But I do recognize it becoming more prevalent. For years now I have maintained that "The King of Queens" is the best sci-fi show on TV, though. It makes me laugh, but the Big Guy to Hot Chick ratio on that show is off the charts and not grounded in reality. A guy can dream, though...

For some reason, I think these guys are cute. I don't know if it's the teddy bear factor or what, but I'd marry em.

Hey... your blog is really coming along... and you're getting a few other readers! Congrats ;)

Oh no, we're not the only two posters anymore :(

You'd marry Jim Belushi? Ewwwwwww!

As for the increased comments, I think the key is that I don't post crap about me. That, and some guy linked my post about Nigella Lawson on his blog - so more hot chix!

Yeah, what's up with this? I can't help but think that some sexism is at work here, as it's apparently OK to have an "average Joe" in the lead role, but his lady can't be anything less than totally hot. Maybe these shows are designed to appeal to men who don't mind seeing beautiful women paired with non-threatening guys. Or maybe there is a show in the works that will pair Kristie Ally with Brad Pitt...

got the argyle from a friend. nice huh? thanks for posting to say you likey.

and i think you've got a point here. in real life, in real world life (not hollywood) guys like kevin james so do not date women like that. do they? i know women that big don't ever get to date the hot guy.

If I think of any more "hot chix" I will send them to your blog.

Please do. The more hot chix, the merrier!

Don't forget "Less than Perfect" and the animated "Fmaily Guy." Also - even when the guys aren't fat, they are often stupid: "Everybody Loves Raymond."

I am happy to have others notice this trend that I have been complaining about for while. It's bad enough there are extremely few sitcoms that I can sit through, then networks completely forget originality and produce mass amounts of these skinny chicks/fat dicks programs. Thanks for letting me rant.

I thought women loved fat dicks. You mean porn has lied to me?

I blame the prevelance on reality TV. Reality shows are super cheap to produce, so networks decide to broadcast more of them, leaving less room for scripted shows. If we were back in the pre-reality TV days, the hot/not hot couples would be diluted by other "normal" scripted fare.
