Anti-Valentine's Day Mix Tape

If you're like me, today doesn't rank among your favorite holidays. So, to help you wallow in your depressive state, I have compiled a mix tape chock full of songs about broken relationships, unrequited love, and general bitterness. I had one self-imposed rule in making this: because it'd be just so easy, no songs by Gerald Collier or the Cure (yet I include The Smiths - go figure). Enjoy!

1. "How Soon Is Now?" - The Smiths (choice lyric: "There's a club, if you'd like to go/You could meet somebody who really loves you/So you go, and you stand on your own/And you leave on your own/And you go home, and you cry/And you want to die")
2. "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" - Weezer (choice lyric: "I talked for hours to your wallet photograph/And you just listened/You laughed, enchanted by my intellect/Or maybe you didn't")
3. "In Love This Way" - Descendents (choice lyric: "Because I think about you every night and day/And when I could have asked I let it slip away/I've got to get to know you, but I'm so afraid/Well it's so hard to be a friend and be in love this way")
4. "Stax" - Steve Poltz (choice lyric: "I've got piles of old pictures/Got your clothes on my racks/You can keep most of the records/Leave me the Motown and the Stax")
5. "Porcelain" - Better Than Ezra (choice lyric: "Well I wish I could kill you, savor the sight/Get into my car, drive into the night/Then lie as I scream to the heavens above/That I was the last one you ever loved")
6. "Good Year For The Roses" - Elvis Costello (choice lyric: "Or the lip ring on a half filled cup of coffee/That you poured and didn't drink/But at least you thought you wanted it/That's so much more than I can say for me")
7. "I Still Miss Someone" - Johnny Cash (choice lyric: "I go out on a party/And look for a little fun/But I find a darkened corner/because I still miss someone")
8. "Sad Songs and Waltzes" - Cake (choice lyrics: "I'm writing a song all about you/A true song as real as my tears/But you've no need to fear it/'Cause no one will hear it/Sad songs and waltzes aren't selling this year")
9. "The Last Polka" - Ben Folds Five (choice lyrics: "He said, 'Well I hate that it's come to this/But baby I was doing fine/How do you think that I survived/The other 25 before you?'")
10. "Add It Up" - Violent Femmes (choice lyric: "Why can't I get just one fuck?")
11. "She Doesn't Exist" - Robyn Hitchcock (choice lyric: "I let her go like the fool that I was/Thought I'd get over her soon/I smell her perfume when my eyes are closed/And I see her face in the moon")
12. "Passing Me By" - The Pharcyde (choice lyric: "Why does the apple of my eye/Overlook and disregard my feelings/No matter how much I try?")
13. "Destruction" - Pigeon John (choice lyric: "I gave you my heart/Then you replaced it with a feakin' pen" - great Say Anything... reference)
14. "Fuck You Lucy" - Atmosphere (choice lyric: "Hunger for the drama/Hunger for the nurture/Gonna take it further/The hurt feels like murder")
15. "Winona" - Matthew Sweet (choice lyric: "Could you be my little movie star?/Could you be my long lost girl?/It's true that I don't really know you/But I'm alone in the world")
16. "Fingerprints - Odds (choice lyric: "There might be the good ol' days/If all the right things get forgotten/A smile can still be photogenic/If you can't see the molars are rotten")
17. "After Hours" - The Velvet Underground (choice lyric: "All the people are dancing and they're havin such fun/I wish it could happen to me")
18. "For No One" - The Beatles (choice lyric: "Your day breaks, your mind aches/You find that all her words of kindness linger on/When she no longer needs you")
19. "So Cruel" - U2 (choice lyric: "Her skin is pale like God's only dove/Screams like an angel for your love/Then she makes you watch her from above/And you need her like a drug")
20. "Before My Heart Attacks" - Jason Falkner (choice lyric: "I'm drinking more and more and more/Can't hold onto myself/There ain't no use when you're not here/Appreciating my good health")
21. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" - Joy Division (choice lyric: "When the routine bites hard and ambitions are low /And the resentment rides high but emotions won't grow /And we're changing our ways, taking different roads /Then love, love will tear us apart again")
22. "Till You Die" - Candy Butchers (choice lyric: "And baby, if I awake/I'm gonna squeeze you til you break/And do you like you did me/And if you cannot see me cry/I will haunt you till you die")
23. "Can't We Be Friends" - Frank Sinatra (choice lyric: "I thought I found the girl of my dreams/Now it seems this is how the story ends/She's gonna turn me down and say 'Can't we be friends?'")

So, there you go. Break out the bourbon and pills and have fun. Me? I'm going to have a big salad, hit the gym, and then watch "The Shield". Just another normal night...

5 and 10. Two songs I love.

I guess that makes me a masochist. Convenient because I have my own whips and chains. Just kidding. Or am I?

Happy Valentine's Day. F*ckers. (Which is exactly how I greeted some of my co-workers yesterday morning...)

#6 is my joint! But I've got nothing but love for Valentine's Day; mad free goodies at school and work. And you know, "There ain't nothin' wrong with that!"

#1's one of my favorite songs, but i never heard the lyrics, except for "I Am Human And I Need To Be Lo-oved, just like every-body else does." Yeah, Smiths and Joy Division should go along with the Cure in pure heartbreak. And Pigeon John, generally speaking, although i never liked "destruction." Too angry.

spydrz - I tried to keep the obscure stuff to a minimum on this list, since you guys would have to compile this mix yourselves.

KtG - Yeah, that is a bit sadistic. You bitch!

THSE - EC represent. Still not a fan of VD, though. Although, it is always nice to get a card and check from my dad.

jasdye - Most of these are straight-up depressing songs, so I needed PJ to add some of the bile.
